Verandah Life: Your Family, Your Life, Building Memories On Your Verandah

There's no denying that Verandahs are a dramatic option to improving the outdoor space available on your property, no matter what you plan on using it for. The options are limitless, and Verandahs can be used for anything from carports, to beautiful outdoor dining areas. When used as a pergola, verandahs can be a gorgeous, seamless link from house to garden. Alternatively, you could even use them as a patio area, which can be used all through the year. With a huge variety of styles and finishes to choose from, Verandah Builders Melbourne can help build the Verandah of your dreams.

Verandah Designs
To stay true to definition, the space will be located outdoors, professional verandah contractors, the right design, and sympathetic buildings can create a verandah that feels like part of the house. Customisable touches like screens, and pillars can give you the personal touch you want, while also giving you the chance to express yourself creatively when selecting the design of your Verandah.

One of the biggest advantages with Verandahs is that it's incredibly flexible when it comes to designs, thanks to the variety of different styles and materials that can be used. Basically, you can add a verandah to any property, whether it's traditional, or ultra-modern. There is also a variety of roof materials that you can use including, but not limited to:
  • Insulated Roofing,
  • Glass,
  • COLORBOND,
  • Tiles.

You can also have many different styles of roofs such as:
  • Flat Roof,
  • Bull Nose,
  • Curved Roofs,
  • Gables Roof,
  • Even a combination of Roofs

Many professional verandah contractors include the gutters when building a verandah, this ensures water does not back into your home. To even further customise your Verandah, there are a number of different flooring materials for them as well, examples are beautiful, timeless timber floors, or if you plan on doing a lot of garden work in yours, you go for an easy to clean, concrete floor.

Verandahs don’t have to just be used in the summer

While homeowners across Australia enjoy their Verandahs through the warmer months, many of them retreat inside once the cool weather hits. With a few modifications, you can enjoy your verandah all throughout the year.

Keeping your Verandah warm
One of the main reasons people stop using their verandah in the cooler months, is simply because it’s too cold for them to enjoy. This is an easily fixable problem though, all you need is some form of outdoor heating. Some fantastic choices include outdoor fireplaces, and patio heaters. The heaters can be powered by electricity, or natural gas depending on your personal preference.

Outdoor fireplaces can be a great option, as they come in a range of designs and sizes to suit the style of your verandah. While a wood fire powers most fireplaces, many kinds run on natural gas, or eco fuel. If you had your Verandah Contractor install ceiling fans, you can run them in reverse to help circulate the warm air around your verandah.

Shelter your Verandah
In general, the design of your Verandah usually means it provides more shelter than most outdoor areas, but you can always improve this by having your verandah contractor installing outdoor blinds. These are likely in the front, and sides of the verandah to help block out wind, rain, and the cold can make being outside in winter less than enjoyable. There are many options for materials when it comes to blinds, so you’ll be sure to find a style that suits you.

Best Ways to Get the Most from Your Verandah in Melbourne

In no particular sequence, we consider the seven most significant components to consider when embarking on designing your Verandah.

Size: Supplying an appropriate size to cater for the furniture and use in the presence of you, your family and/or guests is a must. If you've got a big family or friends, or occasions where you use the place for large functions, and the Verandah is the place you will use, then your needs will not be the same as the casual user. Your intended use will determine the size required for your verandah building project.

Shade & Light: Making sure that good light is available in the area is very crucial. Most times your interior light can be constrained by “completely roofed outside Verandahs”. Taking into consideration louver roofs (if there is available budget) or ensuring some skylights to supply filtered light will provide a balance. Where the Verandah will be situated is essential to ensuring an excellent result.

Open Space: Making sure there's an adjacent open space to the roofed Verandah will help make the entire place feels useful and balanced for all tasks. Adding shade to open places for daylight (especially in summer) will provide significant advantages to your Verandah.

Quality: Our experts at Timber Decking Builders are of the knowledge that using quality products ensures a long lasting Verandah which also creates better visual aesthetics. Spending more on Quality initially will save you money in maintenance costs over the lifetime of your Verandah.

Permits: There’s nothing worse compared to council entering your property, giving you a “show cause” notice that can cost you $ thousands in retrospective permits or to fix or even remove the Verandah entirely. Getting appropriate plans and permits ensures your peace of mind is guaranteed. When selling your house, not having a valid Building Permit for your new Verandah 'will' be an issue.

Design: Getting the appropriate design can not only give usage advantages such as light, style and quality but also to add other benefits from ensuring your new Verandah blends in with your house from an architectural perspective to adding value to the total property of your house. Having a professional designer and building contractor will ensure you get the job done right and to your specific requirements.

Maintenance: Make sure you clean your gutters, both of your home and Verandah, to ensure water flows freely (rain) and check other places on your roof which may likely suffer from animal damage, wind, or plant refuse at least once a year. Cleaning down pipes, gutters, roofing, and any painted or metal construction will prolong the life of your project.

Veranda Testimonial - Melbourne Verandah Builders

My husband and I retired and decided to buy a new house a bit further out of the city. With no children or teenagers to cater to, who needs to live right in the center of all of the action? Plus, at our age, who really has the energy anymore? The traffic was getting on our nerves and all we really wanted was some peace and quiet, which we found when we moved. Thank heaven! Our new house was much smaller than our old one, and that was of course fine because we just don't need that much room anymore. But we did feel like it was missing something... a Veranda. It needed a Veranda. After all, what could be better than relaxing in the late afternoon breeze, sipping an ice tea in the shade?

We got in touch with Timber Decking Now after our friends, who had a pool deck installed with them and were really satisfied with the their work. They sent someone over to take a look at our home on the next working day, and a few days later, the crew got to work. All in all, it took them just a few days to get the entire job done, and they were very responsible and polite every time they came over. We very much appreciated the fact that they were always punctual and did what they said they'd do. They also did a really nice job cleaning up when they finished, which was greatly appreciated since we both have pretty bad backs, especially my husband. The workers also answered all of questions whenever we had any, which was very reassuring. Hubby and I were both teachers, so it would be strange for us to feel like we had no control whatsoever over the situation—this way, we constantly felt we knew what was going on.

In the end, the Veranda is exactly what we wanted, it looks lovely with our home and it's perfect for relaxing on. Hubby reads his paper or magazine, I sip on something cool and refreshing and gossip with my friends or read a novel. Not to mention how much our dog loves to doze there for hours in the shade. Sometimes, when our now-grown children come to visit, we get to watch their children play in the yard with the dog from the comfort of our veranda, one that we've since made even more comfortable with a few nice antique chairs and a table. Everything looks lovely—we were right, a veranda is exactly what this house needed to be the perfect place for us to spend the rest of our lives in.

Our experience with Timber Decking Now has been very positive, and we would recommend this company to anyone looking to have a Veranda built onto their home—they're efficient, reliable, and we were very satisfied with the end result. In fact, that we've also been contemplating having a deck built onto the back of our home so we can have barbecues without having to get everything dirty. Hopefully things will go as well as they have with our Veranda.

Verandah life: Express Yourself With Your New Verandah P1

While a verandah can be a great addition to your home, designing one that you’ll be able to enjoy for years to come can be tricky.  Just like with everything else home oriented, there are a huge variety of styles and design options to choose from.  With today’s technology, and the help of professional Verandah Builders like Timber Decking Now, you can get a Verandah that fits you and your family’s lifestyle, style and budget.

It’s simply a matter of knowing where to start.

Choosing The Right Verandah

When it comes to choosing the right style of Verandah for your home, the first thing you should consider is how large you want yours to be.

Do you want a small Verandah at the back of the house?

Would you like your Verandah to be at the front of your house, or to wrap around one side, or even the entire house?

You should also consider how many people are going to be using the Verandah on a regular basis, as well as what sort of furniture you plan on having with it.  You will obviously want a Verandah that won’t feel cramped when it’s being used. If you can’t seem to make up your mind, we are equipped with the knowledge to help you make the best choice possible.

You should also consider what sort of material you would like your Verandah to be built with. Timber is the most common option, though there are some Verandah Builders that can use other materials for floors and roofing.

Roofing

The roof is an important component to your Verandah, and there are a number of options when it comes to materials, and styles of Veranda Roofs. For a smooth transition between the roof of your home and your Verandah, go with a roof material similar in colour to your homes, and select a design that compliments the roof on your home. Many professional Verandah Builders know how to build many different roofs styles such as:

  • Bull nose
  • Skillion Roof
  • Gable Roof
  • Flat Roofs
  • Hipped roof

The Personal Touch: Decorating Your Verandah

When it comes to decorating your Verandah, with so many options and possibilities, the sky is the limit.

Grow Your Decor

One popular, and gorgeous option to Verandah décor is using potted plants and flowers. Potted plants are particularly useful because they’re completely portable, which means you can design or alter the layout in minutes. Of course, you’ll want to select plants that will thrive, providing beautiful greenery and blooms but you should also consider the pot itself. Pots provide a “frame” to the plants, and can even become a feature themselves. Size does matter, you’ll want them to be large enough to grow happy, healthy plants but not so large that they get in the way or overwhelm your Verandah.
